Let’s dive into the beautiful island of Barbados, a paradise packed with vibrant culture, fascinating history, and stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re planning a family trip to Barbados or just want to teach your kids about this beautiful Caribbean island, I’ve got some exciting facts and fun activities to share.

Fascinating Facts About Barbados

History and Culture

Did you know that Barbados is known as “The Gem of the Caribbean”? It was the first settled island in the Caribbean and has a rich history influenced by African, British, and indigenous cultures. This blend creates the unique and vibrant Bajan culture we see today. Barbados gained independence from Britain in 1966, but you can still see the British influence everywhere—from driving on the left side of the road to the love of cricket.

Geography

Barbados may be small, but it’s full of wonders! The island is located in the Caribbean Sea, east of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Despite being just 34 kilometers long and 23 kilometers wide, it boasts pristine beaches, rolling hills, and lush botanical gardens. Some famous landmarks include Harrison’s Cave, a stunning underground cavern, and the breathtaking beaches of Carlisle Bay.

Wildlife

Barbados is home to some fascinating wildlife. One of the most famous residents is the Green Monkey, which your kids might love spotting in the trees. Birdwatching here is fantastic too, with colorful species like the national bird, the Barbados Bullfinch. And while Barbados does have coral reefs, it’s the shipwrecks around the island that make snorkeling and diving here truly unique and exciting.

Festivals

Barbados is famous for its lively festivals, especially the Crop Over Festival, which marks the end of the sugar cane harvest. Your kids will love the Kiddies Kadooment Parade, filled with vibrant costumes, music, and dancing.

Music and Dance

Music is the heartbeat of Barbados. Calypso and soca are the most popular genres, and their lively rhythms will get everyone moving. Encourage your kids to try out some traditional Bajan dance moves—they’re easy to learn and a lot of fun! To get started, check out our Bajan Beats Spotify playlist filled with vibrant tunes that will bring the island’s energy right into your home.
